Every year from June through September, Arizona’s monsoon season delivers haboobs, microbursts, flash floods, and lightning strikes that test the resilience of every business in the Valley. For companies in Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa, even a few hours of storm-related downtime can mean lost revenue, missed deadlines, and damaged client relationships.

The businesses that survive monsoon season without disruption aren’t lucky. They’re prepared. Here’s what their IT survival plan looks like.

Power protection

UPS systems sized for Arizona heat. Battery backup units degrade faster in high temperatures. A UPS rated for 72°F in a server closet that hits 95°F during an HVAC failure delivers significantly less runtime than its rating suggests. Size your UPS for worst-case Arizona temperatures, not manufacturer specs.

Surge protection on everything. Arizona lightning strikes generate massive power surges that consumer-grade power strips can’t handle. Enterprise-grade surge suppressors on all IT equipment are the minimum. For critical systems, consider a whole-building surge protector at the electrical panel.

Generator for critical operations. If your business can’t afford any downtime (medical practices, defense contractors with delivery deadlines), a backup generator provides hours of runtime beyond what a UPS offers. Test it monthly.

Connectivity redundancy

Dual ISP. When Cox goes down during a monsoon (and it will), a second internet connection through a different provider keeps you online. Use different infrastructure types: one fiber, one cable or fixed wireless.

Cellular failover. An LTE/5G backup connection activates automatically when wired connections fail. For a small office, this can keep essential services running through most storm-related outages.

Cloud-first architecture. Systems hosted in the cloud remain accessible from any location with connectivity. If your office loses power but your team has laptops and cell service, cloud-based systems let them keep working from anywhere.

Data protection

Off-site backups. Your backup must be in a geographically separate location. A backup stored in the same building as your server doesn’t survive a direct lightning strike or flash flood. Cloud backup to a data center outside the monsoon corridor is the standard approach.

Verified recovery. A backup you’ve never tested is a backup you can’t trust. Test full restore procedures at least quarterly. Many businesses discover during an actual emergency that their backups are incomplete, corrupted, or take far longer to restore than expected.

Environmental monitoring

Temperature sensors in every space containing IT equipment. Set alerts at 80°F (warning) and 90°F (critical). When building HVAC struggles during a 115°F day and your server closet hits 95°F, you need to know before equipment starts failing.

Water sensors near server equipment in ground-floor locations. Flash flooding and roof leaks during microbursts can damage equipment in minutes if not detected.

The communication plan

When a monsoon knocks out power and connectivity:

  • How does your team communicate? (Cell phones, Teams mobile app, Signal group)
  • Who makes the call to send people home vs. activate remote work?
  • How do you notify clients of potential delays?
  • Who contacts your IT provider for emergency support?

Document this in advance. During a haboob is not the time to figure out the chain of communication.
